Band Organs Playing on America's Independence Day
By Jack M. Conway

Hi Group, On July 5th members of AMICA Southern California met in
Memorial Park, Sierra Madre, Calif., to play for the community. Jerry
Pell and his son brought a beautifully performing Wurlitzer 103 band
organ. Richard and Dennis Ingram brought their patriotic player piano.
It is painted in a red, white, and blue flag pattern. It can be
trailered in a parade or rolled off onto a stage. They bring a variety
of rolls indexed to selection sheets that the viewers can choose from.

I had my calliope and Perlee 22-key book organ. Lloyd and Brooke
Osmundson brought their cranked organ. Bill Klinger brought all three
of his self-built crank organs. Ken Hodge had his Pell organ. Charles
and Jackie Porter brought the "Spirit of San Diego" concert organ that
he built in a step van. Dave Wasson and his wife brought "Trudy", his
concert organ. Charles and Dave arrange their own music rolls. Frank
and Shirley Nix organized the event and brought one of their crank
organs. I hope I have not forgotten anyone.

The turnout was small but it was great fun to hear the instruments
outdoors, where they were intended to be played, and we had the time
to go around the park to hear all of the instruments and talk to the
participants.

If you have a chance to participate in or attend an event like this,
do it!
