Dear Readers, I just found a music box at an auction in Little
Washington, VA, that had been in an old house forever. It's the
smallest one I've seen, and I can't find anything on the web like
it. Can anyone tell me something about it?
Overall dimensions of inlaid box with curved top are 7" x 4-1/8" x
3-1/2" high. It plays 6 tunes, including Bleu Danube Valse, using a
front and a side lever, with key in the bottom. Glass covers the
mechanism. The cylinder is about 3-3/8" long by 3/4" diameter, with
42 picks. The card has the Swiss Cross on one side and an emblem with
M F and date 1840. What I take to be a serial number, 1407, is stamped
on the mechanism. It plays amazingly well for such a small device.
Any information about history, rarity, etc., would be appreciated.
Thanks, Roger Rydin
