Hi All, A small handful of my customers have roll cabinets that match
their player piano. In the majority of cases, the roll cabinet does
not match the piano.
While Story & Clark was still making wooden roll cabinets for QRS,
they would stain the cabinet to match the piano if the customer wanted
a cabinet when they bought a new player piano. They would also custom
stain cabinets to order. Unfortunately (as I was told), Story & Clark
had so much trouble with getting the cabinet to the customer undamaged
that they finally stopped offering them.
As far back as January 2001, I was referring people to Story & Clark
for pricing and availability, and since then I've received 62 requests
for information. What I'm now recommending is that people check out
the better piano stores for sheet music cabinets. As it so happens,
regular piano rolls just fit into the cabinets I've seen. (I actually
got the idea from a customer who happened to have her mother's old
sheet music cabinet next to her player piano -- and I thought it 'was'
a roll cabinet.)
Another recommendation that I've been giving people is to hire a local
woodcrafter, and have him/her custom make the cabinet. Considering
that QRS use to charge well over $600.00 for their wooden cabinets,
having one made locally could be the least expensive way to go. And,
for a bit more money, the woodcrafter would probably be happy to match
the leg style and color of the piano.
Musically,

P.S.: For your info, QRS is now relatively reluctant to ship anything
via the US Postal System. Unless otherwise directed, they ship
everything via UPS. Also, there is no requirement that the Wrought
Iron Rack be 'filled' with rolls before they will ship the piece. And,
they are still available for $80.00. QRS also sells 'Roll Organizers'
in two sizes. These units are open in the front and hold either 96 or
144 rolls. They are made of "sturdy pressboard/fiberboard sides with
medium oak finish". They sell for $59.00 and $88.00 respectively.
They are shipped 'unassembled'. For more information, you can call
QRS directly at 1-800-24-ROLLS (1-800-247-6557).
