Playing a Player Piano via Electronic Media
By Eliyahu Shahar
A lot has been written about the recent idea of installing electronic
playing devices to a player (or reproducing) piano.
I really don't see what is the problem with installing such a player
as long as it doesn't modify the original player and/or its ability to
play paper rolls. From what I've read about Spencer Chase's system,
it's a wonderful solution to the problems of deterioration of rolls, and
scarcity of the more esoteric rolls. Recutting rolls is expensive and,
with the disappearance of Keystone (I've had no response to emails and
no answer when I've tried to telephone), the companies that are
producing new rolls are as scarce as the rolls themselves.
I am a stickler for originality and hate to admit it when I agree to
making a change to a system, but I truly believe that had digital media
been around 80 years ago when my Ampico was made, they would have
preferred that system. (Let's hold a seance and ask the ghost of
Charles Stoddard what he thinks!).
