I am currently gluing a 14-note Melodia roll player back together.
UPS must have dropped this out of one of it's jets at thirty thousand
feet; what a mess! I have never seen the insides of one of these
players until today and my ignorance is now showing, so please be kind
with your responses.
I can see how the four small bellows inside the player work in concert
to create the vacuum beneath the reeds, but what is the purpose of the
one large bellows beneath the four smaller ones? It does not seem to
be activated by anything on the top of the player, yet can be pushed
manually from the false bottom on the player. Also, it appears to
"push" air into the chamber that the four smaller bellows use to create
the vacuum.
What is its purpose and when is it used? Thanks.
