Longevity of Music Media
By Kevin McElhone

I agree with comments about computer storage. I was a computer
manager for 15 years, from 1976-1991, when I retired in my 30's!
I still have punched 80 column IBM cards and ticker tape samples.

What I stuck with is my Aeolian 58-note roll catalog on 8-inch
diskette, saved from an IBM System 36 machine which is now obsolete.
I am not prepared to type in all 6,950 entries again, and the type
face used in prints is a strange squashed up type not recognised by
visual reading systems. I am therefore stuck with obsolete material
only 12 years old.

I would love to own a MIDI-controlled chamber organ, fair-organ or
the like, but cannot afford to throw it away when 20 years old due
to built-in obsolescence. Should I buy a complete 'spare' mechanism
so I can substitute parts when they wear out?

I read a lot about how MIDI works, Cakewalk, etc., but how do I keep
my data when 3.5" diskettes are obsolete?
