It is with heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of Dean
Randall, of Tacoma, WA, on Sunday, February 23, 2003. He was a
frequent poster here on MMD and corresponded regularly world wide on
the subject of player pianos. Known especially for his knowledge of
the Ampico reproducing piano system, he also was well versed in all
player systems. An avid collector of player piano ephemera and Ampico
rolls, I knew never to bid against him on eBay. He was a professional
player piano restorer for more than 40 years.
All who knew him personally know his curmudgeon act was just that, an
act. I have never known a more generous and caring individual in my
entire life. The hours he spent teaching me to hang hammers, rebuild,
and regulate the action on my Chickering grand were some of the most
fulfilling of my life.
He was a founding father of the Pacific Can-Am Chapter of AMICA
International and an active member until the end. As I am the past
President of the chapter, he was my proof reader for the meeting
notices for the last four years. Being Canadian by birth, he knew
English better that I did and always had a correction.
His knowledge and friendship will be missed by many in our community.
Missing my friend and mentor,
Kurt Morrison
