Sparking of Ampico B Spool Drive Motor

I have been playing my 1929 Ampico B after it has been in storage for
many years and I am surprised how well it works, but one feature bothers
me to the point of waiting for advice before I play it any more.
The roll dive motor has some internal sparking, enough for me to be
concerned about harm to the motor or fire. The sparking seems to
increase with the amount of pull on the motor. I have limited
electrical knowledge and would appreciate any suggestions.

[ Craig Brougher wrote about sparking at the regulator switch points
[ which results from the failure of the governor shunt resistor that
[ shunts the regulator contact points. The primary purpose of this
[ ceramic wire-wound resistor is to reduce the sparking of the points.
[ A secondary purpose is to reduce "bumping" at low speed. See Craig's
