Reliable Electric Pump for Player Pianos
By Spencer Chase
Greetings -- Talking about pumps. I have a design for a replacement
pump for reproducers and players that I have been intending to develop.
I would like to make a reliable pump for remote location for myself and
would consider making some for sale if there is any demand. I might
also consider providing plans since the components are readily
available.
The pump would be a positive displacement type just like the originals
and would have variable speed so its capacity could be matched to any
original pump. It can be made quiet if necessary, but this might be
an add-on option as an enclosure might be needed.
All working parts will be available from standard manufactured components
and a complete rebuild kit of the wearing items should be less than
$100. Replacements parts could be installed in less than an hour and
this includes new valves. Quite a lot less work than rebuilding a box
pump.
Depending on the quality of the motor used and the speed control
mechanism chosen, the price may vary quite a bit. I tend to use
industrial quality components for my own use but most people don't want
to pay the cost. A good quality motor and driver would be around $500
to $600 but a surplus Variac and dc motor could probably do the job for
more like $150. The cost of the pump alone will probably be about
$400, ready to install a motor.
Contact me if there is any interest and I will put the project on
a suitable priority level depending on the response.
Best regards,
