Restoring Western Electric Mascot Case
By Don Teach
I would not make a new case for an instrument unless the old case
has been discarded a long time ago or fire damage was beyond repair.
I just re-veneered a Western Electric Mascot including all new
crossbanding. It looks great and is much better than a new plywood
case. Only someone who really knows coin pianos would ever tell it
is new veneer.
The veneer came from Certainly Woods and the biggest difference is
that instead of the usually four or five pieces of veneer this one is
now two pieces on each side, book matched. I used hot hide glue for
all the work which after some trail and error actually works great.
It has held the veneer much better than any contact cement.
I also re-veneered a juke box six years ago that has show no signs of
veneer problems. It has been stored in a warehouse for the past six
years with no heat or air conditioning.
