As an addendum to Matthew Caulfield's list of songs/rolls played on
the Wurlitzer 165 Band Organ at Glen Echo Park in Cabin John, Maryland,
I still have a crude audio tape from 1963 of this band organ playing
Caliola roll #6111. At that time, the park was under the management
of Mr. Sam Baker (no relation). The organ was serviced by Mr. Weir R.
Penrod of Punxsutawney, PA.
I do not believe that the park management in those days had much
interest in spending much money on maintaining the band organ. Despite
the limited fidelity of the Wollensak portable tape recorder I used
then, one can tell that the band organ was in very poor shape. For
example, most of the bass notes didn't play.
Long overdue changes in civil rights legislation would soon cause
changes in the demographics of those who patronized Glen Echo Park.
As its patronage changed, its fortunes declined. Eventually, Glen Echo
Park closed. The original Dentzel carousel and the Wurlitzer 165 Band
Organ were both purchased by Mr. Jim Wells.
A coalition of local residents subsequently re-purchased both
attractions and they remain in place today under the auspices of the
U.S. Department of the Interior. The park is open during Spring and
Summer months. Visitors can still see the sad remnants of the "Dodgem"
ride and the Shooting Gallery. On the bright side, the Dentzel
carousel and the 165 Band Organ remain.
Very, very few of the park's contemporary visitors realize how rare it
is to find an intact Dentzel carousel, much less an original, restored
Wurlitzer 165 band organ. Were it not for the inspired actions of the
local residents who saved these two heirlooms, it's very doubtful that
the carousel would've been preserved intact.
I think that Mr. Durward Center deserves our gratitude for having
blessed this band organ with his considerable, ongoing restorative
talents. Any devotee of mechanical music should take the time to visit
Glen Echo Park in Maryland, if they're in the Washington, D.C., area
during the late Spring through Summer seasons.
Happy New Year!
