New Scientist magazine article: "Hot-wired Piano Tunes Itself"
This recent article reviews previously published information and adds
a couple of new items explained by inventor Gilmore.
Before it leaves the factory the piano will be initially tuned about
30 cents sharp. Then the computer magnetically excites the fundamental
frequency of the string and applies a current to the string to heat it
(and thus reduce the tension) in order to lower the vibration to the
proper frequency.
The article says that the normal operating temperature is then about
35 degrees Celsius, or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Power consumption of the
piano is about 500 to 600 watts, said Gilmore.
QRS Story & Clark Pianos plans to have the new piano on sale at the
end of 2003.
