Proper Piano Key Weight
By Lucian Popescu

Hello, everybody! I am a piano technician from Romania and, firstly,
I want to thank you all for the information, tips and ideas that I am
finding for almost two years. This time I have a question for whoever
will be so nice to answer to it.

I had restored an upright Steinway & Sons piano (late 1920s): new
hammers, felts, and so on. As the owner complained "it is too heavy"
(and really, it was over 70 grams, up to 78 in the bass!), I tried and
I tried, and finally I decided to put on some extra weight. (The keys
were all originally leaded in the front side). I chose to put the lead
weights in the space between the front of the key and the hole of the
front pin, on the lower side. I did it with the same amount of lead
all along all the keys.

Here is my problem: did I really ruin the piano?

A very good friend of mine, older and much more experienced than me,
said so. We had almost a fight on this subject!

Thanking you,
Lucian Popescu <pianoluc@yahoo.com>
