Johnson Style 163 Band Organ in Salem, Oregon
By Glenn Morris

Hello all: It has been slightly more than a year since my last report
on the Johnson Style 163 Band Organ that was installed during the
summer of 2001 in the Salem Riverfront Park Carousel Building. [See
011101 MMDigest] I have made several trips to check on any progress
in correcting the loud presence of this instrument, and a trip there
today revealed very little progress.

They have installed Plexiglas on the complete front of the organ.
The sides are still open and the brass trumpets appear to almost touch
the Plexiglas! The staff tells me that they can play it when all the
doors to the outdoors are opened. The volume is tolerable at this
point. During the Winter and rainy season, they must resort to taped
band organ music as the volume is almost painful for the staff.

OSHA has many mandates regarding noise levels in the workplace. Some
have suggested an attorney to resolve this debacle.
