Duo-Art, Ampico & Yamaha Disklavier
By Don Teach

In the past I have made some statements that have upset some of the
readers of the MMD. I have received nasty emails in the past and some
good emails.

Last week while opening one email with questions about the Disklavier
my computer crashed and went to a blue screen. It is still not back
up like it was before the blue screen. The following are some of the
answers to questions and comments that I receive via email. I have
been told I was too direct with my comments and that I had left out
information about myself.

I walk on glass where Yamaha is concerned. I do not solicit business
via the Internet for Yamaha products. I do sell Yamaha products and
many other brands of musical merchandise for a living. Musicians
Friend is my biggest competitor and I sell just about everything they
sell and some items they do not sell.

I have been involved with player pianos for 40 years. I do not restore
pianos for a living. I have close to 30 nickelodeon pianos in my
private collection and several reproducing grands. I was one of the
original employees of Pianocorder.

The Yamaha Disklavier is by far the best of the new player pianos on
the market, in my opinion. I sell them for a living.

In my own home I have a Duo-Art grand and an Ampico grand. I like both
of them and the music they play. In the music store we have an Ampico
Grand and a Disklavier grand sitting side by side. In my opinion the
pre-recorded music data files (the 'software') makes the big difference
in the listenablity of the two pianos, not taking into account the
differences in the pianos.

There has been some Ampico to Disklavier conversions that are really
good. It is unfortunate that many of the Disklavier dealers may not
understand the player piano collector and his taste. Just because you
read it on the Internet doesn't make it true. Just my opinions.
