Hi All, I've recently rediscovered and enjoyed some roll recordings
which the late Tom Steuer made by pushing the Tushinsky push-up
against his Disklavier. I corresponded extensively with Tom for some
time because he was interested in building a roll scanner to enable him
to transfer his massive roll collection directly to MIDI without using
the push-up, and I now regret not asking him more about that remarkable
machine.
According to the MMD Archives, this was built for Joe Tushinsky in the
1960s and could play Ampico, Duo-Art, Welte Licensee and Welte Red
rolls. This must have been quite an undertaking and I recall another
MMD contributor who was involved in the project reported that they
couldn't find the necessary Ampico control levers so they cast replicas
from solid gold.
It would be very interesting to learn how the problems of building this
complicated, multi-standard pneumatic instrument were tackled. Can
anyone provide further information or maybe even some pictures ?
