I agree that player pianos don't get the public exposure they need to
attract positive, live-sustaining attention to themselves. I myself
would be out playing at the autumn fairs, Saturdays at Harvard Square
like Dave Levin did (I live only 30 minutes away), nursing homes on
Sundays, etc., if only I could find a way to move my 950-pound upright
Autopiano without damaging it or me.
There was a discussion on this list a while back on the price of piano
moving. It seemed that bargains could still be found around the USA,
but in the Northeast where I live, unless you're willing to hire
a "Larry Daryl and Daryl" caliber of mover, you'll pay US$600+ for
a day move from/to your event. (That was the 'low' price I received
for a local, ground-floor-to-ground-floor move two years ago.)
As for being self-innovative, I don't have room to garage a modified
horse trailer. So it's the portability of the medium that prevents me
from doing the fun, public exposure events. Believe me, I'd be out
there otherwise!
