In the 1960's there was a group of records, put out by Dot records,
called "The World's Greatest Piano Rolls". There were at least 7
volumes. They were played on a superb piano, _in tune_. They had
rhythm accompaniment which, in the stereo versions, alternated sides,
1st tune on left side, 2nd tune on right side; you get the picture.
In an earlier posting these would all be rolls that do not matter, as
there are none by Fats Waller, none by Jelly Roll Morton, but there is
at least one by James Blythe. I do only have four of these volumes and
have spent a lot of money and time tracking down some of them. As was
the case in those days the rolls were not attributed in any way.
There is one which I would like to find: a _very_ spirited version of
"If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts We'll Just Be The Same Old
Friends".
Also, I have about 12 Supertone rolls that I would love to find that
I think are worth having, SO if you should have the last copy in
existence I would love to have it.
Don't get me wrong, the three artists above are great and certainly
deserve to be saved, but there are many others who also deserve to be
saved as well.
If you have a roll with the left hand spool that is loose take it off
and run a piece of masking tape that is about 3/4" long around it and
put it back on with about 1/16" away from the left edge of the roll.
This will help to preserve those rolls we love.
