Wood for Organ Pipes
By Christofer Noering

Hello! Organ pipes can certainly be built in various materials from
Bristol board to concrete (how they may sound I won't discuss here),
but I cannot understand why the material of the _soundboard_
[wind chest?] should have any effect on the tone. As the plies of
the soundboard certainly not should be allowed to warp, why shouldn't
one be able to use a "dead" material such as MDF for boring the
foot holes and grooving out the channels?

MDF, however, is not available in blocks. Balsa wood is, and the other
day I constructed a working model of a simple pneumatic action in balsa
wood, the pores being filled with shellac (_not_ glue, as this will
raise the fibers dramatically).

Has anyone tried to make a soundboard (or pneumatic action) of balsa
wood, or should we consider it a bad joke?

Best regards
Christofer Noering
