Ampico Artists Morton Gould & Leo Ornstein
By A. B. Bonds
A few years ago I was privileged to attend a Nashville Symphony concert
honoring Morton Gould. I went prepared with my copy of Bolero, and
when I was able to meet with him, he was flabbergasted that anyone
remembered that he had done it! He was quite gracious and autographed
the roll for me. (If you have not experienced this performance, you
really need to. It is most...unusual.) Maestro Gold passed away a
year or so back.
About the same time I managed to track down Leo Ornstein, who was
living in a trailer in Arizona. I wrote him to ask if he were willing
to share anything about his Ampico performances, but got a curt note
back from his son (apparently "manager" of Leo and his assets) to the
effect that if I wanted anything I'd have to pay for it. At the time
Leo was 100 years old, so I am sure that he is sadly gone now.
Are there any Ampico artists still living?
