Playing Reproducing Roll on 88-note Player Piano
By Dan Wilson, London

Ray Finch asked [020816 MMDigest], "Will a Duo-Art roll play on
a regular non-reproducing player piano?"

80 notes was only "standard" after about 1927 for the cheaper models
in the Aeolian catalog. I can't speak for other makes, but it's
significant that QRS stopped punching the outer eight notes in their
popular rolls from roughly 1924 onwards. They continued to put them in
on reissues of classical pieces.

If you have a true 88-note player, you have to blank off the four
left-hand and right-hand (to preserve the Themodist facility, if that
interests you). This is best done by attaching a strip of very thin
plastic sheet (the black trash bags used in England work well for this)
of the appropriate width, with Magic Tape, some way back on top of the
trackerbar shelf. This strip can then be folded back to play full
88-note compass rolls. It can also be slewed outwards one note and
pinned in place by the roll as you start it down, for playing Ampico or
Welte Licensee rolls.
