"Les faiseurs de musique" by Jean-Claude Piguet
By Robbie Rhodes

Beatrice Robertson related information in 020807 MMDigest about the
music box maker Breitler S.A. of Switzerland, as published in the book,
"Les faiseurs de musique [The Music Makers]", by Jean-Claude Piguet.
Beatrice said an English version will be available soon.

I found the 1996 French language edition listed by an Internet
bookseller, with a nice summary page; my translation follows.
I suspect that the publisher is Piguet himself.

MAKERS OF MUSIC

History of the music box of Sainte-Croix (Switzerland)

"The Music Makers" relates the life of the music box as it happened,
as seen by those who participated in its existence, its improvements,
its expansion throughout the planet. This industry is rooted in its
heritage.

In this documentary book one finds the discoveries, the improvements,
the Japanese competition, the decline of working at home of the tuners
and pin-setters, the struggles of the women pin-setters, the moments
of glory, the exhibitions, the regaining of favor for the unequaled
quality of the music of Sainte-Croix and region.

During 1810 the watchmakers of Sainte-Croix (Vaud) sought to manufacture
a complete watch in their shops. However, they discovered the musical
piece. It was 'love at first sound'!

Since then Sainte-Croix and the music box have lived loves marvelous,
tumultuous, but faithful. Their offspring again enchants the children
and adults of the five continents.

The region of Sainte-Croix adopted this activity, which was to become
"her" industry, without interruption until our times. This fidelity,
this reputation in the four corners of the world as the center of the
music box, well deserves a book.

The author:

Jean-Claude Piguet, of Swiss nationality, is a very busy resident of
the canton of Vaud. He is manager of the "Journal de Sainte-Croix et
environs" [Newspaper of Sainte-Croix and vicinity]. When his multiple
activities and his mission of deputy to the Swiss Grand Council allow
him free time, he dedicates it to his passion of history.

This book of 434 pages on quality glossy paper is illustrated with
numerous photographs.
