Further to Bernt Damm and Julian Dyer, MMD 02.07.24. My British
(Steinway) PEDA 1920 with rotary switch can play electric Duo-Art or
foot exhaust Themodist and player rolls, while my American (Steck style
37 export model) PEDA 1927 can, without stopping the roll, 'switch' as
you turn off the motor and start foot exhaust from full electric
Duo-Art to foot exhaust half Duo-Art (theme accordions off).
This instrument has the addition of a Solo Lever (opens T1, T2, T4, T8
gradually) so you can electrically operate player, Themodist rolls with
the Duo-Art lever ON and express using the Solo Lever. The Solo Lever
can be used to increase the theme intensity during electric operation
of Duo-Art rolls. The normal foot exhaust is available for player,
Themodist rolls with the Duo-Art OFF using the normal expression
levers.
The Style 37 PEDA is possibly the greatest interactive roll playing
instrument made and yet a very rare instrument. I know of only 5 or 6
in Australia; certainly some in South Africa. May be Style 37's could
turn up in South America?
My Steck PEDA sold in Brisbane in 1928 for 400 pounds, more like
$20,000 Australian today. Seems like the high price and decline in
the market resulted in few sales.
