I agree with Rob Case about the quality of Weber pianos. I've heard
a few Weber Duo-Arts that performed flawlessly. While I can't comment
on the piano action itself, I expect that it is also brilliant.
The thing that bothers me here is that owners of Steinways and Mason
and Hamlins consider themselves to be the super-elite and those of us
with different name-brands have a greatly inferior product.
My Knabe is currently being restored right now by a technician that
had never worked on a Knabe before. I don't believe that many Knabes
of that era had been shipped to Israel so I don't hold that against
him. His first reaction was that the piano is inferior to a Steinway,
but after he removed the strings and harp and I removed the Ampico
action he thumped the soundboard and reported that the vibrations
emanating from it would match the highest quality pianos. He came to
the conclusion that the bass was dead when he first inspected the piano
due to the 80-year-old hammers and strings. In short, he has become
a believer.
I will still envy those with Steinways and Mason and Hamlins but not
because I believe that my Knabe is less of a piano but rather because
owners of those pianos don't have to convince anyone.
