Ampico Player Is Missing Parts
By D. L. Bullock
Eliyahu Shahar wrote about missing Ampico parts. Unless you can find
screw holes where the parts were removed, I suspect this is a piano
from the late period after the merger. They were running out of
shelved Ampico Parts. Often I find them missing all these parts but
the pianos usually have a B drawer and a B stack.
Also missing is the long cutout block that all 14 expression tubes pass
through going from the tracker bar to the expression boxes. These
pianos are also usually missing one crescendo pneumatic, as both sides
of crescendo holes are run through it. I don't know what brand piano
this is but, if it is an Aeolian brand like Wheelock or Steck, then it
would follow from what I have seen built after the 1932 merger.
On these pianos you can play your 88-note rolls by cutting a hole in
slot 4 or a 6 at the beginning of each roll, depending on how loudly
you want the roll to play. You could also use the finger buttons if
you have them.
