Several members have commented on the MMD note regarding the six
rolls issued by Duo-Art of the suite from the ballet "The Firebird"
of Igor Stravinsky.
First of all, the rolls were in modest circulation in the years
following the composer's [audio] recording of them (1929/1930).
He also set down the first movement of his Piano Concerto, in an
arrangement reducing the orchestral part to a "second" piano, both
combined on the roll. And he recorded his piano sonata somewhat
earlier.
The Firebird rolls were issued only in AudioGraphic, with pictures and
text explaining the action of the ballet. So recutting would have to
involve reproducing the graphics, as well as the perforations.
Here is the rollography:
Duo-Art :
528 Stravinsky - Piano Concerto - 1st mvt.
6868 Stravinsky - Piano Sonata - 1st mvt
6956 Stravinsky - Piano Sonata - 2nd mvt.
7002 Stravinsky - Piano Sonata - 3rd mvt.
Duo-Art AudioGraphic :
L'oiseau du feu (The Firebird) - Suite from the ballet
A-95 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll I
A-96 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll II
A-97 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll III
A-98 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll IV
A-99 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll V
A-100 Stravinsky - L'oiseau du feu - Roll VI
The statement that there was only one set of rolls in existence is
patently false. My complete set of the six reposes (as does the
remainder of my 1,000 roll collection) at the International Piano
Archive in Maryland (IPAM) under the curatorship of Don Manildi. All
attempts to get IPAM to lend the rolls, however, have failed and they
are truly "dog in the manger" about them. I have written many times
in the past not only to Manildi (a former colleague of mine at the
radio station WCLV in Cleveland, OH) but also to the past president
(Kirwan) and the current president, C.D. Mote, Jr. Both brushed me off
in my attempt to reclaim my collection, donated to the Library without
my permission.
So the prospects of obtaining the rolls for transfer from IPAM are
rather dim. They have made noises in the recent past about programs
for perpetuating the collection, at least the most historic of the
rolls, but I doubt they will follow through, from lack of funding.
They also have one of Wayne Stahnke's Boesendorfer SE-290 pianos but,
again, they have done nothing with it as far as roll transfer.
Best borrow from the most recent MMD owner, whose rolls are intact,
though boxes suffered in the fire.
