I remember reading somewhere of the American Automatic Typewriter
Co. of Chicago. The "Auto-typist," Roll is not a musical roll, each
roll is a written letter, with each perforation operating a key on the
typewriter.
The typewriters were pneumatically controlled, exactly like a player
piano. several typewriters were tubed together, and several copies of
the text were made at once. with today's xerox machines, the whole
concept of the Auto-typist was rather a complex way of doing things,
but was certainly interesting.
I think these rolls are worth preserving. I don't know if any working
examples of the Auto-typist still exist, but it would be interesting
to find out what is on the rolls.
