Richard Wagner, Bill Nye and Mark Twain
By Michael Woolf
"Wagner's music is better than it sounds." So said Bill (Edgar Wilson)
Nye. But he said it in Mark Twain's autobiography (1924, volume 1,
page 338), which is kind of interesting because he had been dead for
28 years (and Twain had been dead for 14 years). So Bill Nye was being
quoted by Sam Clemens. Or maybe it was a reproducing autobiography.
I prefer Rossini's comment: "Wagner has lovely moments but awful
quarters of an hour!"
