Bob Billings' New Piano Roll Perforator
By Tim Baxter

I was interested to read about Bob Billings' new perforator [020427
MMD], and was curious as to why he had chosen so coarse a step rate
for it (240 perforation per foot). I guess he's not doing recuts of
original reproducing rolls which, for the most part, had much higher
step rates? Robbie could explain better than I the problems that will
arise if Bob uses asynchronous scans of finely perforated rolls in
conjunction with such a low step rate.

I'm guessing Bob is cutting new performances where he's going to
line up MIDI ticks to work with this step rate (a la George Bogatko),
rather than doing recuts.

Curious in Atlanta,

Tim Baxter

[ Bob wrote that his target punching _rate_ is 30 steps per second,
[ and that currently he is testing at 15 steps per second. He didn't
[ mention a target rows per foot or a roll format, but we know that he
 [ likes Recordo rolls! ;-) -- Robbie
