I will let you know Jill, however, I have a feeling that the most
important factor in volume level is the intensity of sound board
vibration and it may be that muffling one side only will have limited
effect. Unfortunately, most players leave little room for any muffling
material on the inside.
If the fiberglass doesn't tone it down much, I may try putting in a few
wooden wedges between the uprights and the sound board such that the
board will be impeded from vibrating (at least in the vicinity of the
wedges). This would need to be done very carefully so as not to damage
the sound board but it seems to me it may be the most effective way to
reduce the volume. We'll see if any MMD-ers think this is folly.
