Recently I had my first experience at buying rolls off eBay. See
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1498258060
Three rolls were advertised, including one Ampico roll. When the box
arrived, there were only two rolls in it. The Ampico roll was missing.
It took another month for the Ampico roll to arrive, following numerous
emails.
The Ampico roll was described as "mint". However, the last six feet of
the roll had extensive chain bridge separations.
The Ampico roll box was described as "some wear". However, the top
half of the box was totally in loose pieces, held in place solely by
the packing material.
The vendor's handle is "pianoblue". According to eBay's records, he
has sold at least 130 items and he currently has 17 auctions underway,
of which a number are small sets of piano rolls. Three "negatives"
have been posted against him, quite revealing.
Within his emails, and on the shipping box, he identifies himself
as Rick Smith, of The Piano Exchange, Glen Cove, NY. (Glen Cove is a
small town on Long Island, north shore, in Nassau County, just east of
New York City.) See http://www.thepianoexchangeofnewyork.com/
The web site is interesting, as it is nothing more than a web presence,
no email link, no links beyond its front page.
I recommend to deal with caution.
