"All In The Family" Theme Music
By D. L. Bullock
I went to the first Pianocorder installation class they had in the San
Fernando Valley in 1977 or '78. I and my piano dealer friend/employer
went and we decided to go out to eat in Beverly Hills. We found a nice
restaurant called "The Ginger Man." We ate a nice dinner and while
eating we enjoyed a wonderful pianist playing a black studio piano at
one end.
I noticed at the other end of the restaurant was a large round booth
in the corner that had room for about 8 people. I noticed that in the
middle of the corner sat a man who looked very much like actor Carroll
O'Connor. I was not sure but the more I looked at him the more he
looked like Archie Bunker.
I suddenly realized that the pianist's style sounded very much like
that on the closing credits of "All in the Family." Carroll later got
up and walked around the room greeting friends and restaurant staff.
He went over and gave the pianist a big hug and then disappeared as he
sauntered into the kitchen like he owned the place, still visiting and
hugging various staff members.
I believe I got to hear Roger Kellaway in his own element playing the
piano in the restaurant that I later learned was actually owned by
Carroll O'Connor. He named the restaurant "The Ginger Man" because
that was the name of one of his first stage plays he performed in.
