Celestina Organ Plays Endless Bands
By Phil Dayson
This is in response to Kelly and Stephen Goodman's posting regarding
Celestinas. About 20 years ago at an auction in London I purchased
a Celestina. It was unusual for a couple of different reasons.
First of all, it came fitted in its original wooden carrying case and
was in absolutely mint decorative condition (the playing mechanism
unfortunately needed a rebuild). The gold lettering and the varnish
looked and still looks as if it had just come out of the factory.
The organ also came with a number of endless bands and a complex
device comprised of rods rolls and bars. It turned out that the
"device" was an attachment to the Celestina for playing the endless
bands. (Such a device was needed to play endless bands since the take
up spool is fixed. In the "improved" Celestina the takeup spool is
removable thus endless bands can be easily played.)
Roger Booty of the MBS of GB discovered patents for this odd contrivance
and eventually published an article in the Society Magazine of Autumn
1988.
