Seek Rolls for Dienst Hupfeld Player Mechanism
By Knut Iversen

Some time ago I bought a beautiful player piano, made with a lot of
wood carving. I am not able to find any name on it and the last owner
knew very little about it. His family used it just like an ordinary
piano for more than 60 years. There were no rolls with the piano, and
that's my problem. I am quite new to this and do not know what to look
after and where to find rolls.

I am living in Norway and there are very few people having these old
instruments here. I know the piano was once coin operated and had a
mandolin attachment and was powered by a motor. Most of the mechanism
is below the keyboard.

I found a picture of the mechanism in Bowers' "Encyclopedia", on page
392 at the bottom to the left. Below it says: "Hupfeld's patented
piano-player apparatus as used in certain Dienst, Kuhl & Klatt and
other German-built instruments of the early 1900's."

I will be very grateful if somebody could tell me what sort of piano
rolls to look after.

Kindly Regards from Norway

Knut Iversen

[ On page 391 Bowers quotes a 1904 Dienst catalog: "The latest
[ novelty is the self-acting pneumatic mandoline [attachment]."
