Cost vs. Benefits of AMICA
By Sam Harris
I love the reprints and have told those involved that I think they are
great. Thanks to Carl for clearing up the matter concerning the cost
of the reprints. I hope they continue to reprint these great pieces.
My AMICA cost really increased because I decided to pay the first class
postage rate. The cost is okay with me, but then again I have only
been a member for about 7 years. This means I was not around when the
AMICA Bulletin was the _main_ source of information for us. I'm sure
it was more "relevant" when the technical info we now get on the MMD
was only found in publications like the AMICA Bulletin.
I believe everyone who receives the AMICA Bulletin would agree that
it is starving for more member participation in the area of content.
I desire to see more technical articles. I wish I was qualified to
contribute, but I'm not. Perhaps if the editors read the MMD some of
the great info here could be included as technical articles in the
Bulletin which could include the addition of diagrams and pictures.
I understand many of the pictures and diagrams have to be made by the
writers, who for the most part work full-time and have no-time to fool
with it.
Another thing I think would be interesting would be Bulletin "tours"
of other members collections. There are so many small collections out
there that get no attention. These collectors could take pictures
inside and out and write an article. In my opinion it would be great
reading about the stories behind the instrument and their restorations.
Maybe we have someone reading this now who have never had the opportunity
to share their collection with Micas and would be willing to put an
article like this together. I think it would make great reading.
Anne and I will be attending this years AMICA convention and I'm looking
forward to meeting some of you and seeing all the great instruments.
This will be our first and I hope we enjoy it more than the MBSI
meeting in Charlotte. If not we will feel as though we again have
wasted our money.
