When I read MMD this morning, I was a bit disappointed that Bill
Chapman did not give AMICA a better "plug". Perhaps because Bill is
an officer in that group, he felt the necessity of a reserved response.
With apologies to Bill, but for my own satisfaction, I would like to
add these words about AMICA to introduce that organization to those
seeking a group of dedicated collectors.
First, AMICA (Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors' Association) is
dedicated to the preservation of all roll/book operated instruments.
A wonderful magazine is published six times a year. Usually included
with that magazine, the AMICA Bulletin, is a high quality reprint of
some significant pamphlet or catalog.
Within the AMICA Bulletin, readers find reports from the various
chapters or the last convention, articles about collecting, and
technical tips. From time to time a major feature appears dealing with
some aspect of automatic music history. Of course, most readers start
at the back of Bulletin where display ads and "For Sale"/"Wanted" ads
appear. Study of these ads has made many a collector a happy person.
The current market is easily discerned in these ads.
In my own collection, I proudly display many Bulletins on the
instruments in my collection. The high quality cover is usually
intriguing and I use them to supplement my collection for my visitors.
AMICA is a great way to network and meet other collectors -- give it
a try!
