Seek Repair of Mechanical Singing Bird
By Diane H. Kay

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year from south-central Connecticut, USA.

I've been reading through the MMD Archive about mechanical birds. They
seem to be the bane of the mechanical music world! Of course, I've got
a few questions about them, as my father-in-law has a mechanical bird
that needs some help.

The bird can't be very old, I figure. From the style of the silk and
plaster foliage attached to the bird's perch it looks to me to have
been made in the 1960s. There is a circular mark on the bottom of the
cage that contains a little image of a bird over three mountains,
flanked by the letter K on the left and the letter G on the right.
This bird moves his head side to side, wags his tail, and opens his
beak but the chirping sound isn't working. My father-in-law is trying
to decide whether it is worth fixing as a nice little surprise for his
wife.

I telephoned a clock mender who used to work on these birds when they
came into his shop, but he's not doing that kind of work anymore and he
said that the birds are a pain in the neck to repair.

So, can anyone on the list help me to find someone here in the
northeast US who still works on these birds and isn't going to charge
an exorbitant fee to fix it? I'd be much obliged for any and all
input. If this is something that my father-in-law and I can work on
ourselves, I'd love to hear about that too.

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Diane H Kay
