Converting Orchestrelle to Play 88-Note Rolls
By Kim Bunker
Happy Holiday's to all MMDer's Kim Bunker here from Orange Coast Piano.
In my last letter to MMD I spoke out in anger of someone wanting to
even know about changing an Aeolian Orchestrelle from its original
design of playing 58-note rolls (organ style) to receive 88-note rolls
(piano style). Something I forgot to mention was I started restoring
automatic musical instruments about 30 years ago. Some of the first
ones I restored were pump organs and Orchestrelles. You might say I
was raised on them.
In my relatively short time of 15 or so years I'm a member of MBSI and
AMICA and now MMD. Isn't it our whole goal of being members of such an
elite group to restore and preserve these musical marvels of a bygone
era? I have always believed this to be single most important goal of
such a society, so that our children and their children will be able to
know the delights of what music and musical toys were like back then.
When I hear stuff Like this ( changing anything!) it tells me ignorance
can be bliss to some. So if I stepped on some toes, sorry! But that's
just the way I feel. Should any of you decide to change any one of
these glorious machines, please don't hesitate to call someone else!
Sincerely Kim Bunker
