Converting Orchestrelle to Play 88-Note Rolls
By Chris Kalstone
I have read all the posting on these great machines and any cosmetic
or mechanical changes is a true insult to the Munroe Organ Co. We have
two Orchestrelles in our collection and about 1500 rolls. I also have
about 800 65-note piano rolls. Since I like early blues and march
rolls I built a little jig to cut down the rolls. Most of these rolls
sound great.
Back in 1992 I bought a bunch of A roll recuts and cut these down and
respooled two songs to a roll. "Alley Cat" and "76 Trombones" sound
petty good. In most cases I have to stop the sub-bass reeds. I also
have a home version of the Reproduco, the one with the 88-note style
spool box.
Several years ago I bought a 65/88 Aeolian transposing tracker bar and
spool box and fit it into the Reproduco. It now plays OS, NOS, 88-note
and 65-note rolls. With a second modified snap-in shaft it will also
play my 58-note rolls. All the modifications can be changed back.
There is just not enough room in an Aeolian Organ to make any temporary
modification. With all this interest maybe in the near future we will
have a roll recutting project like the one Mike Kitner had started
before his death.
