I hope this is not too far off the mark of mechanical music, but we've
had a string going about identifying some old patriotic songs. There
are some individuals here in town that are trying to identify an old
patriotic tune and get the sheet music.
They don't have a title or who wrote it, but they do have words.
I don't know how complete these lyrics are, if they're a verse, a chorus,
or both. I'm placing them below in hope some of you may be able to
identify the song. If I had a title and maybe know who wrote it, I
might be able to then get the sheet music for them off one of the sheet
music web sites. Here's the words:
"My great, great, great-grandfather came to America
because in America a man was free.
He fought and slaved 'cause he was the sort of American
who fought for our heritage -- believe you me.
He had sons -- they were the ones
who fought for July the Fourth.
Their grandsons -- those with their guns --
some for the South and the North.
And as it goes, my grandfather came to America
because in America a man was free.
Washington ... Jefferson ... Lincoln ... and all
my greats got me to think
what a fool some guy would be
to try to take this land away from me."
Has anybody ever heard of this song and could possibly identify it?
Thanks,
Dick Merchant
