I have seen this done many times, including one demonstration by
a "big shot" from Steinway at a national Piano Technicians Guild
annual convention, in which he advocated moving all grands in this
manner, assuring us that no damage would result.
In my humble opinion and for what it's worth, I think that this
practice is the reason we piano technicians earn so much money
repairing pedals, rebuilding lyres, plugging and redrilling and
remounting lyres. It's fine for the repair men but it's hardly
in the customer's best interest.
