Hand-Cranked Player Piano
By Tommy Forney

Did anyone see the Exxon Mobil Masterpiece Theatre installment of
"The Cazalets" last night on Public TV? There was a player piano
outside on the street being hand-cranked. I checked the MMD Archives
and found many references to hand-cranked organs, but only one for
piano: http://www.foxtail.com/Archives/Digests/199704/1997.04.25.15.html

How common is this type of arrangement? I'm sure there must be many
ways to modify a foot pumper to hand crank. As a paraplegic, I'm just
curious about this possibility.

The crank was perpendicular to where the roll mechanism would be,
extending almost above the keyboard, and the operator stood alongside
the piano.

[ What sort of mechanism could be added to the pedals of a pumper
[ piano so it could be 'pedaled' with the arms? (This might be
[ a good use for an old exercise machine! ;-) -- Robbie
