Funny, I thought we in the UK had bad enough weather even in the height
of summer to warrant covering up our rides, but even with our "rainy"
season lasting a full 12 months (so it seems sometimes) they continue
to operate in the open.
Carter's Steam Fair is a good example, sometimes billed as "the last
fair of the year AND the first fair of the year" running from
Christmas, through and New Year and well into January. In fact isn't
the static fairs - usually at coastal resorts - which close for the
winter.
Several years ago I helped the team pull-down the Irvin set just before
Christmas in Covent Garde, London. We began after the last ride at
10.00 PM, and finished just before dawn the following morning. The
weather was really foul, with a biting cold wind and soaking rain.
Back at the yard, the tilt was put out to dry in a shed (the organ
was left out under canvas) and was not moved for at least a month.
Incidentally, this same organ, an 89-key Marenghi, sits in the yard
under canvas as I write, waiting for a sympathetic buyer.
