Modern Music on QRS Rolls
By Don Teach
I agree that most new rolls from QRS have a sound of their own.
I personally do not like the arrangements that QRS uses today. Even
the old rolls don't have arrangements like a piano player (real live
person) would have played.
Some of the older Aeolian rolls from the 'sixties and Melodee rolls
from the sixties had arrangements more like a real pianist would play.
I once asked Bob Berkman and Ramsi Tick why this was so and they
responded that a QRS roll had a player piano "sound" that they wanted.
The one newer QRS roll that I really like is a jazz roll by Marian
McPartland. Some of the rolls by Peter Nero and Peter Duchin are nice.
There are some good arrangements on the Yamaha Disklavier disc. I once
had a tune off one of these disc made into a piano roll for my own use.
I do not think I could have that done again. Too bad. You can always
build your own perforator and cut rolls to your liking.
