Clark Orchestra Roll Company & Don Rand
By Earl Hennagir
I spoke to Don Rand a couple of times last week and it sounds like the
roll project that he has been working on for the last year is coming
along fine. He has borrowed some rolls from myself and a friend of
mine here in town to re-cut. That rag roll mentioned by Mr. Goodman
would more than likely be one of them, as I know Don was pretty excited
about re-cutting it when he heard the tape of it.
I know it has been mentioned a few weeks ago about how slow Don Rand
has been about getting these rolls done, but I think that he has done
a fine job of producing nickelodeon rolls and I don't see how anyone
could complain about the quality of the finished product! It also must
be a lot of work to recut a roll and take a great deal of time to find
out how much interest there is in re-cutting rolls before the job is
undertaken.
It would seem that part of the trouble too is lack of interest in
people wanting more music for their pianos, along with the fact that
some collectors of nickelodeons have 15 or 20 examples of a particular
piano in their "collection" and have eliminated that many potential
customers for new rolls. It's a puzzling situation for Mr. Rand, I'm
sure. He has done a good job of turning up a lot of music in the last
year and I think that anyone that enjoys their nickelodeon will be
happy to have his latest offerings.
Keep up the good work Don, and thanks.
