Salzburg Stier Restoration Project
By Jan Kijlstra

In previous digests we could read about the restauration of the
Salzburg "Stier". This restauration is mainly divided in three parts:
the pipes, the mechanism and the barrel. The pipes will be restored
by an Austrian firm. (Which one? -JK)

The mechanism as well as the barrel are under restauration in the
Netherlands. This is done by the museum "Van Speelklok tot Pierement"
in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The barrel will be repinned with the original 12 musical pieces,
written by Leopold Mozart (the father of W.A.) and Eberlin. This
music is to be reconstructed from piano pieces by Leopold.

Since the Stier is using 25 notes, and the barrel can only play tunes
of approximately one 1 minute duration each, the piano parts have to be
accommodated to the barrel. The restaurators, however, do not see any
problems, because they are experienced in this type of restaurations.
