Hi to all. About 30 years ago I had a 5' 8" Chickering Ampico Grand.
It had what I term as a "transitional" drawer, which had most of the
features of a Stoddard Ampico drawer but without the repeat feature
that enables one to repeat any small segment of a roll. The complete
roll could be repeated at will; in fact, one evening I was playing
"Clair de Lune" with repeat turned on and I went to sleep. The next
morning I woke to "Clair de Lune" playing; it had played all night.
I am getting to the moving story now.
The legs of this piano were held on by two large screws; the legs fit
in a rather large groove. I had this piano moved to Houston and back
to Dallas, and I was on the spot when this piano was delivered. The
movers (two men) put two of the legs on without screwing them in place,
at which time I said, "Stop! You have to put the screws in place!"
The told me, in essence, that they knew best, so they lifted it up and
the legs did stay on but they snapped outward. They quickly put the
piano back down and put the screws in place and all went smooth after
that, but we were all sweating for a bit.
