Piano Movers: Allied Van Lines
By John Dewey
I installed a PianoDisc player in a new piano that was paid for by
Allied Van Lines. I do not know what happened to the original piano,
but I doubt if Allied was giving someone a new piano just for being
a good customer.
When Allied came to pick the piano up at my shop the movers were going
to put the piano on the skid board while the skid board was setting on
a free-wheeling dolly. They were going to stand the piano on its key
bed end on the skid board.
At this point I asked if they had ever moved a piano before and they
said they hadn't. When the piano was on the truck they thanked me for
my advice. I think their putting the piano on the skid board that way
would have done Laurel and Hardy proud. I sometimes wish I had had the
whatsuts to let them try.
I will have to say they did cover the piano with lots of pads and
wrapped the whole thing in stretch wrap. As well padded as the piano
was, I don't think anything short of being hit by a train would have
scratched the finish.
