65-note rolls are freely available very cheaply in the UK, both from
dealers and from the three roll auctions (Post-Bid Plus, Post Bid
Enterprise and Paul Morris). These are mainly classical and Edwardian
salon music.
The upside-down and backwards rolls were made for the Simplex piano
player made by Wilcox & White. Most makers started by trying to make
their system unique to capture all the onward roll business, but found
in the end it made their instrument less attractive to buy, hence the
big standardization of 1908 on 88-note format.
