Seek Piano Roll of "Lift Every Voice and Sing"
By Joyce Brite
For some time now, I have been searching for a piano roll of "Lift
Every Voice and Sing." This hymn is known as the Black National
Anthem although it is not unusual to hear it sung in churches with
predominately Caucasian congregations.
The words were written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson and music
in 1921 by his brother John Rosamond Johnson so the time frame was
feasible for producing a piano roll. However, hymns didn't sell as
well as foxtrots or one-steps, unless the hymn was an "old standard",
so it is uncertain if a roll was ever produced.
Does anyone in this group have a roll of "Lift Every Voice and Sing"?
I have sent a MIDI file of this song to MMD in a separate message.
